Introduction
|
| My name is Daniel Hokka Zakrisson and I live in the Stockholm-suburb Bro. |
| It's a tiny place, with just a few thousand inhabitants. I am 25 years old |
| and am currently running my own company. |
| |
|
My computing history
|
| I got my first computer for christmas 1997. It was an old 486 with a few |
| MiB of RAM and Windows 95. It had a bunch of games, so it was a lot of fun. |
| I thought I was über-1337 for reading the registry, even though I didn't |
| actually understand what it said. In November 1998, my dad got one of those |
| "lease through work"-computers, a
Pentium 2 450 MHz with 128 MiB of RAM and |
| Windows 98. |
| |
| It wasn't until spring 2001 I started using the internet at home and making |
| some websites and such. I had been using the internet at school since 1999 |
| or so, mostly to chat with people sitting in the same room and finding |
| weird sites. |
| In July 2001, I finally got a broadband connection; Telia ADSL 512/400 |
| kbps. |
| |
| With the broadband connection, I was able to be online a lot more without |
| feeling guilty about not paying the phone bill. I started hanging out in |
| the Geocities Help Chat, which is where I started learning more and more |
| about computers and programming. Within a period of a few months, I had |
| successfully created a Perl and a PHP site, although very basic and ugly |
| (this still hasn't improved...). |
| |
| It was during the spring of 2002 I got my
first computer that really was |
| mine. I installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 on it, from some CDs I had gotten with |
| a magazine. I really liked being able to peek under the hood of the OS, and |
| began downloading Red Hat Linux 7.3 in June. The download wasn't finished |
| by the time I had graduated from primary school. |
| |
| In August 2002 I started high school at IT-Gymnasiet in Rissne. I got my |
|
laptop from school, which meant an additional 8 hours per day of using the |
| computer. I had it dual-booting, although I pretty much exclusively used |
| GNU/Linux. |
| |
| I think it was some time during autumn/winter 2002 that I got my
first good |
|
computer, which is still my workstation... I don't really need a good |
| computer, as I don't do too much. Kernel compiles happen in the background |
| anyway ;-) |
| |
| I got my PA-RISC computers during the summer of 2003. |
| |
| During the autumn of 2003 I started hanging out in the
SmoothWall IRC |
| channels. I learned quite a bit about
iptables, as well as why proprietary |
| development models suck, and for that I thank the SmoothWall community and |
| SmoothWall Ltd. I stopped contributing to the project some time during the |
| summer of 2005. |
| |
| It was during 2004 when I got Hawaii to replace Opera, Bussola and |
| Margerita which got me interested in running virtual servers. After playing |
| around with UML and deciding I wanted something a bit more performant, I |
| found
Linux-VServer. I have been supporting it on a regular basis for a |
| couple of years now, and have been co-maintaining util-vserver since around |
| mid-2006. |
| |
| I graduated from high school in 2005. After that, I studied for a year at |
| the
department of computer and systems sciences at Stockholm's University, |
| but I didn't feel that it taught me anything I wanted to know so I dropped |
| out. In August of 2006, I started studying Linux systems at
Nackademin from |
| which I graduated in June 2008, having completed both the ISP and |
| networking classes. |
